This project occupies a steep coastal site which has cued much of the form of the proposed house. The proposed house steps up the excavated site, negotiating a level change of about 13 metres from street to an existing swimming pool at the rear. We have designed the house by placing volumes on existing terraces and bridging new volumes across these to the highest terrace with simple and open staircase connections. Each existing landscape level has a corresponding internal level, which means that all spaces have good access to external spaces. The construction will accentuate differences between a building skin which presents a public face (face brick and controlled, framed openings) and those which open to private garden spaces (largely timber and glass with large, flexible openings).
