This project is an extension and renovation to a federation house in Marrickville. The extension centres around an internal courtyard. The existing out buildings have been demolished and the use of the original house has been rationalised which has led to a reduction of built form and an increase in usable outdoor areas. This project has been developed using economical construction methods. The project was completed in May 2004.
The form of the additions were designed to provide a strong link between the garden and interior of the house, the section captures north light in the winter months whilst providing shade and protection during the summer. The construction method is derived from the basic lightweight steel technology used in the construction of agricultural sheds. A frame and truss system was prefabricated and craned into place over the existing brick house and then tied together with light weight steel floor and wall framing.
